Before Angela Bassett's horrible slur, before the messy divorce with the sex-addicted Eric Benet, before...Catwoman, there was that shining moment of Oscar glory when Halle Berry became the first African-American woman to win an Academy Award for a leading role.
Having played Dorothy Dandridge, the first African-American to receive a nomination in that category, Halle's win was particularly poignant and memorable.
Berry's winning role in "Monsters Ball" had originally been offered to Angela Bassett, who turned it down. When asked about it later, Bassett (whom Berry honoured in her acceptance speech) exclaimed, "I wasn't going to be a prostitute on film."
It's a pity the cat-growl can't be spelled out in the Latin alphabet.
While the film boasted some graphic scenes of a sexual nature, it bears saying that Berry's character in the film, wasn't a prostitute.
It also bears saying that Bassett hasn't had a decent role since. Good luck getting your groove back!

Its kind of annoying that people are still talking about the Angela vs. Halle Newsweek article since this happened so long ago and most of that article was misreported. When Angela Bassett said "I didnt want to play a prostitute on film" shes was talking about a role she was offered earlier in her career, not Leticia, and thats why it doesnt make sense in terms of Halle's character in Monster's Ball. Because Angela's words were taken out of context.
Halle Berry knows this and thats why the two actresses are still friends. I like Halle but Angela has more talent in her pinky finger, she just has too much dignity to portray certain roles.
I just thought I'd let you know before you continue blogging craziness about AB getting her groove back. Dont you know shes never lost her groove? :)
